The male cats, particularly, could have modeled for the inimitable sculptor. Almost primitive in physique, yet sinuously muscular, the mature male Chartreux is a gloriously statuesque creature. Females, though structured on a smaller, finer scale, are no less vigorously appealing. Few females, however, achieve the hefty bone and substance a full-grown male may boast! The woolly double coat, as soft and lush as shearling — especially thick on the adult male — appears to add bulk to either sex, but there’s still a lot of cat under that silver-tipped, blue-gray fur. It’s almost a shock, when you’re expecting a basso rumble, to hear the Chartreux speak in a tiny voice that wouldn’t reach stage front. Furthermore, this charming cat wouldn’t dream of throwing its weight around — at least, he wouldn’t; she might! These gentle giants are aware of their own strength. Breeders generally agree that male Chartreux, when altered, make better pets. Both sexes, however, are extraordinarily dedicated to family life, when they’re not just “hanging out,” preferably in the heights of a cat tree. Despite their bulk, these cats imagine themselves to be the Flying Wallendas of trapeze fame. And yes, they need plenty of space in which to perform! When they’re not minding their own business, they love a romp with other family pets and the kids, a game of fetch, and prefer your bed to their own. A Chartreux quickly learns its name, and comes on call. Almost dog like in their devotion and
behavior.
Chartreux kittens are precocious. Physical maturity can be three years in coming, with a scraggly stage between kitten and adulthood that puts one in mind of a gawky, adolescent youngster. Then, almost overnight, they put it all together, with stunning results. Meanwhile, lots of handling is recommended. Environment and attention have everything to do with this breed’s adult manners and behavior. Since brushing the double coat is a no-no, you’ll want to stroke the cat frequently, running your fingers through the fur, and finishing with a chamois. This hands-on routine, accomplished daily, will contribute to your cat’s social demeanor, too. Weight:
